iPhone Photo Sync helps people to save 100 clicks every day! When travelling with friends, everyone captures different moments. One person takes the group photos, another photographs the food, and someone else records the scenery.
Instead of exchanging everything after returning, you can collect photos in one shared space during the trip. Apple’s iCloud Shared Photo Library lets you and up to five other people contribute photos and videos using your own Apple Accounts. You can add selected pictures or share directly from the Camera app.
Only photos and videos added to the Shared Library are visible to its participants—not every photo on your iPhone. Items kept in your Personal Library remain private from the shared group. You can choose what to contribute manually, or use Camera sharing according to your settings.
What is iCloud Shared Photo Library?
A Shared Photo Library is a collaborative collection within Apple’s Photos app. Invited participants can view, add, edit and delete shared photos and videos. The person who creates the library provides its iCloud storage.
How it can help during a trip
- Collect photos from different members of your group.
- Share new pictures directly from Camera.
- Add selected photos after reviewing them.
- Share updates with invited friends or family back home.
Before you start
A Shared Photo Library is not a view-only album. Photos you contribute move out of your Personal Library and become accessible to everyone in the shared group. Your entire photo collection is not automatically shared.
Can photos be shared in real time?
Camera sharing can contribute pictures as you take them. However, they still need to upload and synchronise through iCloud before other participants can see them.
Connection quality, file size, battery conditions and available storage can affect the timing. “Real-time sharing” here means sharing throughout the trip—not a live feed or guaranteed instant delivery.
What you need before setting up
Check that everyone has:
- Their own Apple Account.
- An iPhone running iOS 16.1 or later.
- iCloud Photos enabled.
- No existing membership in another Shared Library.
One person creates the collection and provides its iCloud storage. A library supports six people in total, including the creator, and each person can belong to only one at a time.
Already using a Shared Library?
You cannot join a second one just for a trip. Check everyone’s existing membership before setting up a travel collection.
Set it up in six steps
Step 1: Turn on iCloud Photos
Open Settings → Your name → iCloud → Photos and enable Sync this iPhone.
Step 2: Create the Shared Library
Open Settings → Apps → Photos → Shared Library and follow the setup instructions. Choose existing photos to contribute or add them later.
On iOS 17 or earlier, use Settings → Photos.

Step 3: Invite your friends
Send invitations during setup. Your friends can open the invitation, tap Accept & Continue and follow the instructions to join.
Step 4: Enable Camera sharing
Go to Photos settings → Shared Library → Sharing from Camera, then choose:
| Option | How it works |
|---|---|
| Share Automatically | Contributes photos when other Shared Library participants are nearby |
| Share Manually | Lets you control sharing through the Shared Library button in Camera |
Step 5: Check the Camera sharing button
In Camera, turn the Shared Library button on to contribute new photos. Turn it off to keep them in your Personal Library.
Before taking a private photo, check that the Shared Library button in Camera is turned off so it saves to your Personal Library instead.
Step 6: Take a test photo
Take a photo and ask a friend to select Shared Library or Both Libraries in Photos. Allow time for it to synchronise.
Share during the trip—or with friends back home
Friends do not need to be nearby to view the collection. If you are exploring separately or sharing with invited friends at home, use manual Camera sharing or add selected pictures afterwards.support.apple+1
To add existing photos, open Photos, select your pictures, tap More and choose Move to Shared Library.
Photos are not always instant
Uploads need time to synchronise. Connection quality, battery conditions, data-saving settings and available storage can affect when friends see them.
Two things to remember
- Shared permissions: everyone can edit and delete shared content. Contributed photos move out of your Personal Library—they are not separate copies in both places.
- Mobile data: review Photos’ mobile-data settings before travelling. Low Data Mode and Low Power Mode can pause synchronisation.
Photos not appearing?
First select Shared Library or Both Libraries. Then check the library status in Photos for a connection, power or storage message. Avoid turning off iCloud Photos while troubleshooting.
Set up the library before departure, test one photo and check the Camera sharing button during your trip. That keeps sharing simple while leaving you in control of what your friends see.
Stay connected while sharing your trip
Sharing travel photos does not have to wait until you find Wi-Fi. With mobile data enabled for Photos, your shared collection can update while you are out, although synchronisation times depend on your connection and device settings.
When choosing a travel SIM or eSIM plan, consider photo uploads alongside maps, messaging and everyday browsing. Check the destination coverage, data allowance and validity period to find an option that suits your trip.
